baaak3 (b. 1997, Bangkok, Thailand; lives and works in Hong Kong and London)

Cheng has a keen interest in observing everyday life and often employs motion graphics to convey both the scenes she encounters and the imaginative extensions they inspire. Rather than pursuing a surreal appearance, she emphasises the playful details within objects, drawing attention to elements that are often overlooked. She has participated in numerous large-scale multimedia projects, including architectural projection mapping for Tai Kwun (2021 and 2022), as well as large-scale screen works for corporations, concerts, and conferences.

Cheng graduated from the School of Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2020. Expanding her practice from graphic design to 3D animation through self-directed learning, she now works as a full-time motion designer and independent artist.

SELECTED WORK

1. On Running
TRE
2025

Created a series of immersive videos for On Running TRE - an annual Running event - where On would be offering wholesale for the first time. Visitors could test the shoes whilst running on treadmills, with content displayed in front of the treadmills.

Developed 5 animations in total, each highlighting a specific shoe, a combination of new and updated to existing models, and their special features.

This project operated under a strict three-week timeline for design and production. I also built the dynamic intro sequences and motion graphic overlays to tie the visual experience together.

2. Swatch
SCUBAQUA
2025

For the 2025 SCUBAQUA collection launch, I helped bring a fluid, underwater world to life. My core role involved designing the digital environment and creating the primary jellyfish 3D assets used in the Key Visuals (KV) and color-themed videos. It was a fantastic experience seeing my original jellyfish designs approved and utilized across the entire global campaign.

4. Post-Function
Solo Exhibition
2025

POST FUNCTION is my first solo exhibition. Drawing inspiration from everyday objects, the works juxtapose two items that are similar yet never used together, animating them through motion graphics to capture fleeting moments of coexistence.

In this process, the objects' physical properties—when placed side by side—determine their movement, resulting in interference, twisting, collision, or merging into a single form, thereby revealing unforeseen possibilities.

As a branch of moving images, motion graphics is commonly seen across fields such as news, stage visuals, and advertising. In commercial contexts, this short-form animation frequently moves between reality and fiction to spark curiosity. For instance, it may distort material—making hard metal appear soft, or turning liquid into woven fabric—or place objects in unreal environments, such as luxury goods drifting through the deep sea.

This exhibition, however, seeks to reframe the aesthetics of commercial design within an artistic context. The goal is no longer to create illusions for commodities, but instead to return to the object itself. Through motion graphics, POST FUNCTION explores the latent connections and interactions between objects, inviting audiences to once again attend to their essential forms.

A looping 3D reel created for the launch of Nothing’s 2024 Community Event in Tokyo, Japan. The brief centered around a playful "conveyor belt sushi" concept. I had a blast designing and modeling the custom Nothing Sushi Express items to fit their iconic brand aesthetic—with the custom soy sauce bottle (1) definitely standing out as my favorite piece to create.
